Our Team

NAEM is comprised of a team of seasoned energy industry professionals with commercial, technical, regulatory, and legal experience that include the marketing of emission reductions, power, and natural gas, renewable energy and carbon capture technology development projects, transmission planning, and contract negotiations.  

Carlo Plava
President

Energy industry professional and entrepreneur with over 35 years of diverse expertise in project and business development, strategic planning, industry intelligence, and commercial, contractual, technical, and regulatory advisory services. Extensive experience with clean-tech and renewable energy projects, marketing of carbon offsets credits, power, and natural gas, and power generation transmission interconnection and regulatory permitting processes.
Carlo was also the Founder and President of Pteragen Canada Inc., a privately held company created to develop the 120 MW Peace Butte Wind Project in Alberta, Canada, that was sold to Spain-based Renovalia Energy Group. He was responsible for securing transmission interconnection access, permit and license to construct, land lease agreements with the project area landowners, and pursuing power purchase agreements to satisfy Peace Butte’s project financing requirements. 
Carlo also previously held several customer service and commercial roles in Alberta’s deregulated natural gas and power sectors at the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO), Duke Energy, LG&E Natural Marketing, and NOVA Gas Transmission Ltd. 

John C. Goetz
Advisor

John Goetz is a lawyer and principal at EnerNext Partners. Prior to co-founding NAEM, John co-founded North American Climate Exchange, a platform for spot market transactions which developed one of the first industry accepted emission credit transaction agreements in Canada. In 2017, John co-founded EnerNext Partners to leverage his 30+ years of experience at large law firms and in business to better advise his clients in the energy, cleantech and sustainability sectors. EnerNext Partners is a boutique legal and business advisory partnership that specializes in assisting both early stage and mature companies with their legal, technology commercialization and project development challenges.

John’s work is focused on the interwoven energy and cleantech sectors. He is passionate about his clients’ businesses and works alongside them on their corporate and commercial matters, advising on renewable energy and cleantech project development and the integration of emission reductions and trading into the financial models. John serves on the boards of several cleantech and renewable energy companies and on various committees for charitable and post-secondary institutions. 
John advised on several of Alberta’s carbon capture, transportation and sequestration projects. He co-authored The Development of Emissions Trading in Canada (Alberta Law Review) and also co-authored Enhanced oil recovery through carbon capture and storage : an opportunity for Alberta. He is currently working with a number of leading-edge renewable energy and carbon capture technology clients that have the capacity to generate significant volumes or renewable power and fuel efficiently and economically, while reducing millions of tonnes of GHG emissions annually. 

Ashton Brehm

Ashton Brehm is a corporate advisor and lawyer with a dynamic and forward-thinking approach to the evolving landscapes of clean technology, alternative energy and the carbon markets. Navigating the ever-evolving regulatory landscape of carbon emissions and credits, Ashton ensures that clients not only comply with existing frameworks but also leverage their carbon offset projects for maximum return. Ashton contributes to the team’s market intelligence, constantly analyzing market trends and regulatory changes to advise on proactive strategies. His understanding of both the legal intricacies and commercial opportunities in carbon trading, positions him as a trusted resource for anyone aiming to excel within the carbon markets. Ashton, alongside his involvement in several other initiatives, is currently serving as an advisor to a steering committee focused on developing a blockchain-based marketplace for ecological goods and services.
